Hera
Icelandic singer/songwriter, Hera, has been living in New Zealand on and off for about 10 years now whilst cultivating a very successful career in her native homeland on the opposite side of the world… Not an easy task geographically speaking but one that was deservedly rewarded in 2002 when HERA was named Best Female Singer at that year’s Icelandic Music Awards, a major achievement for the young artist given that for the previous 10 years that category had been almost completely dominated by Bjork.

Previous SmokeFreeRockquest finalists Bang! Bang! Eche! are 1 girl, 3 guys, lots of colour, playing a mix of house, post punk new wave & J-pop. Think of Flying Lizards meets the B52’s and you are close. They won RDU RoundUp and are set to release their much anticipated EP this month along with a tour of New Zealand.

A Flight To Blackout is a three-piece band from Christchurch. They play long, shifting instrumental tunes, currently adding vocals to the mix. They have also opened for a few good Australian and touring bands and were finalists in RDUs Round Up Competition.

MC Kayla is fast becoming pretty well known in the Christchurch dance seen preforming with artists like Salmonella Dub she is definitely someone to look out for.

Thomas Kuruangi
Thomas Kurangi is 18, and has is studying at Aranui High School. Thomas has written a variety of songs, and entered this one in The Play It Strange Songwriting competition last year coming 10th in the Top 20.

The O Lovelys
At the core of The O’Lovelys is the dynamic duo of Laura Lee (vocals/synth) and Brooke (keys), collaborators since lunch money days at Hagley Community College. Laura Lee’s opera-trained voice is powerful enough to make vultures cry and gargoyles dance with Brooke’s ballerina-elegant key work providing a foundation most divine.
